How do you clean an inflatable paddle board

2026-08-15

An inflatable paddle board is a fantastic investment for anyone who loves spending time on the water. Whether you use it for casual weekend paddling, yoga sessions, or fishing trips, a well-maintained board can serve you for years. But here is the catch: most boards do not wear out from paddling — they deteriorate from improper care, especially when it comes to cleaning and storage.

At YOLLOY, we have manufactured inflatable paddle boards and water recreation products for over a decade, exporting to more than 100 countries. We have seen firsthand how simple cleaning habits can extend the life of a board dramatically. In this guide, we will walk you through the complete cleaning routine, drying process, and storage best practices for your inflatable paddle board.

Why Cleaning Your Inflatable Paddle Board Matters

A quality inflatable paddle board is built to be tough. YOLLOY boards, for example, use drop-stitch and double-wall fabric construction with commercial-grade PVC tarpaulin that is UV-resistant, waterproof, and reinforced for demanding marine use. Despite this durability, two silent threats can shorten your board's lifespan significantly if left unchecked:

  • Trapped moisture. Rolling up a damp board and storing it in its bag creates a dark, warm, and humid environment — the perfect breeding ground for mildew and mold. This is the single most common cause of premature board failure.
  • UV exposure. Extended exposure to direct sunlight gradually breaks down PVC and fades colors. While YOLLOY boards are made with UV-resistant materials, no inflatable is immune to prolonged sun damage.

The good news is that both threats are entirely preventable with a proper post-paddle routine that takes no more than ten to fifteen minutes.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

The Standard Freshwater Rinse

After every use, whether you have been paddling on a lake, river, or ocean, rinse your board with fresh water while it is still inflated. A standard garden hose on normal pressure works perfectly. Avoid pressure washers, as high-pressure water can force its way into seams and valve areas.

Gently wipe the deck pad with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. The textured grip surface traps sand, dirt, and grit, so give it a bit of extra attention. For stubborn stains, mix a small amount of mild soap — ordinary dish soap works well — with water, apply with a soft cloth, and rinse thoroughly. Leftover soap residue can attract dirt, so make sure you rinse until the water runs clean.

Important: Never use bleach, solvents, abrasive scrubbers, or harsh chemical cleaners on your inflatable paddle board. These substances can strip the UV-protective coating and degrade the PVC material, trading a cosmetic issue for structural damage.

After Saltwater Use — This Step Is Non-Negotiable

If you paddle in the ocean, a freshwater rinse after every session is absolutely essential. Salt does not evaporate with water — it crystallizes and stays behind, slowly corroding your valve mechanism, metal D-rings, and seam areas. Pay special attention to flushing the valve and any metal hardware with fresh water after saltwater exposure.

Cleaning the Valve Area

The sealing surface of the inflation valve can accumulate dirt and debris over time. To clean it, briefly release the valve while the board is partially inflated — the rush of escaping air will blow away loose particles. If the valve area still looks dirty, use a cotton swab with a small amount of mild soap solution to gently clean around the seal, then wipe it dry.

How to Dry Your Board Properly

Drying is the step most people rush through, and it is also the step that makes the biggest difference. A board stored even slightly damp will eventually develop mildew — there are no exceptions.

Here is the correct drying routine:

  1. Towel-dry the entire board while it is still inflated. Wipe the top, bottom, rails, and especially the deck pad, which holds moisture longer than the smooth PVC surface.
  2. Air-dry in the shade, not under direct sunlight. You want the board completely dry, but UV exposure during drying is counterproductive. A covered patio, garage, or shaded area works best.
  3. Flip the board over to check the underside. Water often collects on the hull where you cannot easily see it. Let both sides dry thoroughly.
  4. Check the deck pad one last time. The foam grip is the slowest part to dry and the first place mold appears. If it feels even slightly damp, give it more time.

Storage: Inflated vs. Deflated

How you store your board depends on how soon you plan to use it again.

Short-Term Storage (Days to a Few Weeks)

If you are paddling again soon, leave the board inflated. This saves pump time and is gentler on the material than repeated tight rolling. Release a small amount of air so the board is not at full pressure — air expands with heat, and overpressure can stress the seams. Keep the board in a garage, shed, or shaded covered area away from direct sunlight.

Long-Term and Seasonal Storage

For winter storage or extended breaks, deflate the board fully, make absolutely sure it is bone dry, and roll it loosely. Avoid folding the board in the same crease lines every time, as this can stress the material over months. Store the rolled board in its bag in a cool, dry, and dark place — a closet or shelf works well. Avoid attics that bake in summer heat, freezing garages in winter, and anywhere with damp concrete floors. Do not stack heavy items on top of a rolled board, as prolonged compression can deform the core.

A Note on Board Quality and Longevity

Good cleaning habits are essential, but they work best when paired with a well-built board. YOLLOY inflatable paddle boards are manufactured with drop-stitch and double-wall fabric technology, using commercial-grade PVC tarpaulin that is UV-resistant, waterproof, and flame-retardant. Every board undergoes testing before shipment and is backed by our manufacturing expertise — over 10 years of OEM and ODM experience, more than 50 patent certificates, and over 3,000 completed projects worldwide.

Whether you are looking for a single board for personal use or a fleet for a rental business, choosing a durable inflatable paddle board for sale from a manufacturer with proven quality control gives you a head start on longevity.

Keep It Simple

Caring for your inflatable paddle board is not complicated. Rinse it with fresh water after every use, dry it completely, and store it out of the sun. Do these three things consistently, and your board will feel like new season after season.
