How do I properly store an inflatable dock floats during winter?

2026-08-18

An inflatable dock is one of the most convenient pieces of waterfront gear you can own. It inflates in minutes, packs down small, and turns a plain stretch of shoreline into a swimming platform, a jet ski berth, or a spot to lounge with friends. But that convenience comes with one responsibility: when the season ends, the dock needs to be put away properly. Winter is the toughest season for any inflatable, and how you store it over the cold months decides how many more summers it will give you.

Most quality inflatable docks are built from drop-stitch fabric or commercial-grade PVC tarpaulin, materials that are tough, UV-resistant, and waterproof. Even so, they are not indestructible. Freezing temperatures, trapped moisture, and careless folding are the three things that shorten an inflatable's life faster than anything else. The good news is that a little preparation before the first frost will keep your inflatable dock floats in great shape, ready to go back in the water the moment the weather warms up.

Why winter is hard on an inflatable dock

Before getting into the steps, it helps to understand what actually damages an inflatable during the off-season. Three problems do most of the harm:

  • Moisture and mildew. If a dock is packed away while still damp, the water trapped inside the folds creates a perfect environment for mold and mildew. That leads to stains, a musty smell, and over time, degradation of the fabric and seams.
  • Freezing temperatures. PVC becomes stiff and brittle in extreme cold. A dock left inflated or half-inflated outdoors through a hard freeze can crack or develop stress fractures, especially around valves and seams.
  • UV and heat. The opposite problem is just as real. Storing an inflatable in an unshaded spot or a hot attic exposes it to UV rays and heat that break down the material over time, even when the dock is not in use.

Winter storage is simply about removing all three risks. Here is a straightforward routine that works for docks of any size, from a compact swim platform to a large commercial floating dock.

Step 1: Clean the dock thoroughly

Start by giving the dock a proper wash. Dirt, sand, algae, and salt residue can all cause damage or odors while the dock sits in storage for months.

  • Rinse the whole surface with fresh water to wash away salt, chlorine, and lake or sea debris.
  • Use a mild soap solution and a soft brush or sponge for stubborn spots. Avoid harsh solvents or abrasive pads, which can damage the coating.
  • Pay extra attention to the seams, valves, and any non-slip surface where grime tends to collect.
  • Rinse again thoroughly so no soap residue is left behind.

Step 2: Dry it completely

This is the single most important step, and it is worth being patient with. Any moisture left inside the dock when it is folded up can lead to mildew and a ruined next season.

  • Inflate the dock fully and let it air dry for at least 24 hours. A full inflation opens up the surface so every part gets airflow.
  • Dry it in a shaded area. Direct sun speeds up drying but also exposes the material to UV, so shade is the safer choice.
  • Wipe down all surfaces with a clean, dry towel, including the underside and around the valves.
  • Open all the valves so any moisture inside the chambers can escape. In humid climates, a fan pointed at the dock speeds things up considerably.

Step 3: Inspect for damage and make repairs

While the dock is clean and fully inflated, take the time to inspect it. This is the easiest moment to catch small problems, because a slow leak is much easier to find when the dock is fully pressurized.

  • Run your hands over the surface and check for punctures, abrasions, or weak spots.
  • Examine the seams closely. Reinforced, high-temperature welded seams are standard on quality docks, but they still deserve a visual check.
  • Test every valve to make sure it seals properly and does not leak air.
  • Fix any damage before storage. Most docks come with a repair kit, and a small patch applied now is far easier than dealing with a bigger problem in spring.

If you notice damage you cannot repair yourself, contact the manufacturer. A reputable supplier will be able to advise on the right repair materials for the specific fabric of your dock.

Step 4: Deflate properly

Once the dock is clean, dry, and repaired, it is time to let the air out. How you deflate matters more than most people think.

  • Open all the air valves completely before you start pressing out the air.
  • Work from the end opposite the valve, gently pressing the air toward the opening. Do not force or rush it.
  • If you have an electric pump with a deflate setting, use it to pull out the last bit of air. This makes the dock much easier to roll tightly.
  • Leave the valves open while the dock is in storage. This prevents pressure buildup from temperature changes and lets any remaining moisture escape.

Step 5: Fold or roll it carefully

The way you fold the dock affects its condition when you unpack it next spring. Sharp creases weaken the material over time, so treat the folding step with the same care as the cleaning.

  • Roll the dock loosely rather than folding it into tight creases. If you do fold it, alternate the fold lines each season so the material does not weaken in the same place.
  • Do not compress it too tightly inside its storage bag. A little slack is fine.
  • If you have space, storing the dock partially inflated or loosely rolled is even better for the material.
  • Keep the storage bag slightly open to allow air circulation.

Step 6: Choose the right storage location

Where you store the dock is just as important as how you prepare it. The ideal spot keeps the dock at a stable temperature, away from sunlight, moisture, and pests.

Good storage conditions:

  • A temperature-controlled space, ideally between about 40°F and 100°F (4°C to 38°C).
  • A dry area with good air circulation, such as a climate-controlled garage, basement, or indoor closet.
  • A spot protected from rodents and pests, which can chew through PVC.
  • Away from sharp objects, heavy items that could fall on it, and heat sources like furnaces or water heaters.

Locations to avoid:

  • Outdoor sheds without climate control, especially in areas with freezing temperatures.
  • Attics that get extremely hot in summer.
  • Damp basements that are prone to flooding or high humidity.
  • Anywhere near direct sunlight or strong heat sources.

Regional considerations for winter storage

Where you live changes the details of the routine:

  • Northern and cold-winter regions: The storage area must stay above freezing. Extreme cold makes PVC brittle, so a heated or insulated space is a must.
  • Hot and humid regions: Focus on avoiding heat and humidity. A climate-controlled space prevents both material degradation and mildew.
  • Coastal areas: Be extra thorough about removing salt residue during the cleaning step, and store the dock in a dry place away from moisture.
  • Mild climates: Even if you can use the dock year-round, protect it from UV when it is not in use and keep the storage area dry.

Bringing the dock back out in spring

When the weather warms up and it is time to use the dock again, do not just toss it in the water. A short check-in prevents surprises:

  • Unpack the dock and inspect it for any damage that developed during storage.
  • Inflate it fully and check for air leaks, especially around the valves and seams.
  • Test all valves and fittings before putting it in the water.
  • Apply any necessary repairs before use.

A few extra tips

  • Store the pump and any accessories in the same place as the dock, so everything is ready when you need it.
  • Take a few photos of the dock before storage to document its condition.
  • If you are storing the dock for a very long period, check on it mid-season to make sure nothing has shifted or been damaged.

Proper winter storage is a small investment of time that pays off in years of extra use. Clean it, dry it, repair it, deflate it, fold it gently, and keep it in a stable, dry place. Do that, and your inflatable floating dock will be ready for many more summers on the water.
