How do I clean algae off my floatable dock?
If your inflatable dock spends the summer sitting in a quiet cove or tied up beside a slip, you have probably watched a green, slimy film creep across the deck. Algae grow almost anywhere there is warmth, moisture, and a little sunlight, and a floatable dock offers plenty of all three. Left alone, that film does more than ruin the look of a clean water platform
— it becomes slippery underfoot and can stain the PVC surface. The good news is that removing it is a simple routine once you pick the right tools and a few safe products.
Why Algae Love Floatable Docks
Most rigid floatable docks are built with drop-stitch construction, in which thousands of polyester threads join the top and bottom PVC layers to create a stiff, flat deck when inflated. The surface itself is smooth and waterproof, two things algae find very welcoming. Still water, shaded corners, and the humid air close to the shoreline give single-celled algae the perfect place to settle. You will typically see three kinds of buildup:
- A light green film over the whole deck — the most common type, and the easiest to clean.
- Dark, spotty algae in shaded corners and along the edges, where the deck stays damp the longest.
- A distinct waterline stain at the exact level where the deck meets the water, plus a thin ring just below it.
Once you can name the type, cleaning becomes very predictable. None of them need harsh chemicals to come off a well-made surface.
What to Have on Hand Before You Start
- A garden hose with a normal or medium-pressure nozzle.
- A soft-bristle brush or a soft sponge.
- Mild dish soap that is free of bleach.
- White vinegar, for stubborn stains.
- A bucket of clean water and a large soft towel for drying.
Skip metal scouring pads, abrasive scrubbers, and strong solvents. They scratch the PVC and leave fine grooves where algae will regrow even faster than before.
A Simple Step-by-Step Cleaning Routine
Step 1: Rinse the Surface
Spray the entire deck with fresh water to wash away loose dirt, dust, and the top layer of algae. Work from one end to the other so grime does not smear back over clean areas. Pay attention to the edges and seams where algae tends to collect.
Step 2: Apply a Mild Soap Solution
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bucket of warm water. Work in sections, applying the soapy water with the soft brush or sponge and letting it sit for two to three minutes. Do not let the soap dry on the surface, as residue simply attracts new dirt.
Step 3: Scrub Gently
Scrub in short, overlapping strokes using light pressure. Because a drop-stitch deck is rigid, the material will not flex under the brush, so you do not need to press hard. The goal is to lift the film, not to grind into the PVC.
Step 4: Treat Stubborn Stains
For green film that will not lift, use a solution of roughly one part white vinegar to three parts water. Apply it, leave it for five to ten minutes, then scrub gently and rinse. If dark blotches remain, a diluted bleach solution can be used as a last resort — mix about ten per cent bleach with ninety per cent water and use it only occasionally, because frequent bleaching can dull PVC over time.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly and Dry
Flush every section before it dries so no soap or cleaner leaves a haze. Rinse the underside and the edges as well as the top. Finally, run a towel over the deck or let it sit in the sun to dry; moisture left sitting overnight invites mildew.
Cleaning the Waterline and Underside
The thin layer of algae at the waterline needs a slightly different touch. Wet the area, apply soapy water just above the seam, and wipe it with a soft sponge moving sideways along the dock. In shallow water you can usually reach the underside of a partly submerged deck this way too. Avoid stiff scrapers and anything that could pierce the material, and never use high-pressure equipment to blast buildup off the side of the dock.
A Word of Caution about Pressure Washers — A pressure washer set above a gentle setting can force water past the seams and into the valve mechanisms of a floatable dock. That hidden moisture is hard to remove and weakens the bond around the seams over time. If you do use one, keep the pressure low and hold the nozzle well back from the surface.
Keeping Algae From Coming Back
- Rinse the deck with fresh water after every use, especially after a day spent in a lake or river.
- Let the surface dry fully in the sun before it is covered or stored.
- Keep the deck free of leaves and debris that hold water against the PVC.
- If your mooring is always shadowed, move the dock to a sunnier spot for a few hours now and then.
- During the busiest weeks of the season, give the deck a five-minute wipe-down every few days so algae never gets a head start.
A Light Maintenance Routine While You Clean
Cleaning day is also a good time to inspect a floatable dock. Check that all valves seal properly and hold air, run your hand along the seams looking for separation or bubbling, and make sure the reinforced D-rings used to anchor the dock are still firmly attached. Catching a small issue early is far easier than repairing a failure later in the season.
When it comes time to replace a tired deck or scale up for a marina, resort, or rental operation, a reliable manufacturer makes the process straightforward. YOLLOY designs UV-resistant, waterproof inflatable floating dock platforms with non-slip surfaces and reinforced seams, and it is one of many brands that also supply repair kits and compatible air pumps so maintenance stays simple through the whole life of the product. Because much of its work is custom, you can specify size, shape, color, and branding to match your site exactly.
When Cleaning Is Not Enough
Algae cleaning only keeps the surface safe, so know the difference between a stain and real damage. Look out for tears longer than about an inch, seam separation, valves that will not hold pressure, or material that has turned brittle from years of sun exposure. Those are signs a repair kit will not fix and that a replacement is the smarter choice.
If you operate a commercial inflatable dock for a marina, resort, or rental business and want a durable, easy-to-maintain platform built to your requirements, the YOLLOY team can help with design, production, and delivery.
